A modern job hunting campaign is by nature often intricate. While the web has offered a variety of new channels, it also creates increased competition for choice jobs and potential challenges for job hunters.
Job search needs to be thought of as a personal, highly aimed marketing operation where you are the product. Your resume is an ad. Your extended network is your source for information and opportunities.
So where does the internet fit in? At AA-Careers, we just posted a job on a popular job board and got over 650 responses in a week. For one position. That’s increased competition for jobs.
Had a strong candidate gotten ahold of us before we placed the ad, they could have gotten the position before having all that competition. How? By finding an employee at our company who became aware of the job prior to posting. Everyone knew about of the job for at least 11 days before it was posted. Who in your network might know of a job that’s coming available soon?
Be careful to check your application materials thoroughly before submitting them. When we did an analysis of the 650 resumes, we found a large number of errors. 63% of the applicants were easily taken out with a speedy triage process. How? The same way any HR professional would. By eliminating resumes where the objective didn’t match our job description. By passing over prospects whose cover letters gave us reasons not to employ them, like "I know I’m overqualified but I really need a job". By eliminating candidates whose documents that didn’t open properly. And by eliminating candidates who didn’t bother to spell check their cover letter and/or resume.
So the good news is that job boards give you a feel of who is hiring, and for what kinds of jobs. But once those jobs are posted, the competition is intense. You can still try, if you have a well honed resume, designed to appeal directly and clearly to the recruiter. And if you have practiced interviewing – so you don’t stumble at a critical point.
Another downside to be aware of is how easily you can be checked on on the net. As we Googled several candidates, we ran into some personal web pages that were in questionable taste. Nothing larcenous, but enough to rock our thinking about who to choose.
AA-Careers provides a broad set of services for Bay Area job seekers, providing our clients a personal career consultant, a managed job hunting campaign, modern tools like a personal website, video, highly targeted resume, and much more. Let us know if we can help you.
Be careful out there, and good hunting!

Some people do not understand the idea of online commerce, but then again some people do not understand themselves, either. To grasp such concepts, you really only need to monitor your “clicking habits” for a few days. Notice where your surfing habits take you; and what, if anything, you are buying. The modern Internet Consumer is there and gone, in a click of an eye. If you don’t grab us immediately with good stuff, SEE YA, we are out of here at the speed of light.
The good news is, you can make money on this fact — and Google AdSense is just one way. If you’ve been thinking about employing one of the myriad opportunities for income on the internet, I recommend getting an instant education, with: “The 10 Second Internet Manager: Survive, Thrive & Drive Your Company in the Information Age” By Mark Breier.
Mark Breier is one of the key people behind Amazon.com, an early dot-com that won. Why did they win? Because Mark and his team were relentless. Other examples of winners: Armin A. Brott, co-author and former Marine, Commodities Trader and MBA; the Blitz Marketing Team at CarWashGuys.com. These marketers are all slightly insane, just like the modern day Internet Person. It appears that’s what it takes; hard-core crazy internet guys willing to go the distance in the deployment of their market dominating campaigns. So if you’re thinking of doing the dot-com thing, you may want to pick up a copy of Mark Breier’s book to kick things off in the right direction.
Overview of “The 10 Second Internet Manager: Survive, Thrive & Drive Your Company in the Information Age”
“The 10 Second Internet Manager” delivers an info-packed punch that’s sure have info-hungry marketers salivating for more. Real-world issues like outwitting the competition, tactics that move mountains, how to deal with high-strung, ego-driven personalities with a penchant for kicking butt… it’s all covered in Breier’s book. If every dot-com CEO would have taken the mere five hours needed to digest this information, fewer would be gone today.
In this book, Mark speaks of integral team concepts such as maintaining balance, fun on the team and winning. He cites the venture capital game, investment banker group and all the people it takes to please the crowd. He covers an in-depth evaluation of customer feedback and sales in the e-commerce world. He gives great advice for managing e-mail, electronic communication, when not to have a meeting, when to get a life, when to ask for more, when and how far to push the troops, what to say to the media, investors, VC, and investment bankers. He reveals the ways in which investment bankers use your information on other projects and why it’s important to make deals fast. He’ll tell you why loose lips sink ships.
My personal reaction to this book:
I recommend the book to everyone, but feel that some companies are even more dedicated to winning than they were at Amazon.com. I could have done without some of the whining that I picked up in the pages of this book. I thought that some of the hard work complaints were invalid because that is what it takes and that’s life. If you can’t cope, get out of the fire; only the strong survive. I got the feeling that some of these guys at Amazon were yuppy pricks and wimps on the fire line; but their way worked for them, so hats off to their team. We work that hard everyday at my company and you probably do, too. They did it using other people’s money, big deal. But no matter what you or I think, they did do it indeed. Fact is, if it were that tough on them and not worth it, they wouldn’t have gone through with it in the first place. But even through the bellyaching, they asked for it, they got it and they persevered. When all was said and done, these guys were willing to pull though on their commitments to the shareholders and drive hard at the market.
All in all this book was a good read. I could not agree more with 80% of its content, with respect to general marketing practice and principle. The other 20% was information only important to a dot-com or to Amazon itself… but if you’re buying strictly to get in on the dot-com action, then it’s likely just what you’re looking for. Some of the stories did an excellent job of making their point, and painted a clear picture of real life on the inside at this fast paced company. Next on the reading list is Amazon.com, the story of the bookseller itself.
I recommend Mark Breier’s “The 10 Second Internet Manager” to anyone sitting on their butt and wondering what it takes to survive and to win in the age of the Internet. It is fun to win, but the stakes are high… and only a few can actually do it. So buy it, read it and think on it, thanks, click out to your right on one of the side bar items. SEE YA.

You are probably leaving a lot of money on the table while promoting you affiliate program and don’t know it. Any big time affiliate marketing program owner who sees this article will be screaming, “No!” at the top of their lungs. You on the other hand will be cheering, “Yes!”
When you use and affiliate page or link, you are sending traffic to the owner of the program’s site. On the surface, that seems great. You send people to look at the product, opt-in, buy it, and get paid.
What could possibly be any better?
This is what could be a lot better. You could be the one getting what you just gave away, to market other products in the future or even now. What is it? It’s the name and email address of the person. That’s right, the information that you just gave away, is the most valuable thing you could have and you probably don’t know it.
That name and email address is worth everything to you. This is why. You could use it to send your promotional mailings to that person about anything you offer. If you don’t have it, you have no way to contact that person. However, the owner of the program you’re promoting does. You can bet that they will use it to send their offers out to people on the nice shinny list that you just helped them build. They are thanking you and, at the same time, laughing at you hysterically.
This is just one way solve the problem. Build a landing page that offers the program or service with your own opt-in box. If you don’t know how, learn how, because you’re loosing a fortune. Then you just take the affiliate link and place it in the section of the code that would go to your thank you page. So, after the visitor signs up to be on YOUR list, you are automatically sending that person to your affiliate page. Then you are getting the best of both worlds.
Can you think of one good reason to give your list of potential customers and profits away? Internet marketing gurus have big enough lists. Makes sure that you are building yours first. You wouldn’t leave $1,000,000 on a table in a city bar. At least I hope you wouldn’t!

In my time researching the search engines, I’ve noticed something rather strange. Literally millions of searches are made each month for “brand names” and actual site names. For example, on Overture alone, last month, there were millions of queries made for the term “internet explorer”. Having been on the internet for around seven years (running sites for over five), I’ve naturally assumed that people use it the same way I do. So, I know that internet explorer is a Microsoft product so I just type http://www.microsoft.com into my browser.
Apparently, that’s not what everyone does. Here are some other examples from Overture: eBay - over 7 million searches, Google - over 9 million searches, Amazon - Over 800 thousand searches (OK, lots will be for the river or the forest but still …), PayPal over 340 thousand searches and so on. Considering that Overture has only about 5% of the search engine market, you can see that there are millions and millions of people who actually use search engines to find sites when they could just type the name in their browser and slap a .com on the end.
Now, on to the good stuff. Of those companies that I mentioned, all but Google have an affiliate program. For example, PayPal pays $5.00 for every person who signs up. 340 000 x $5.00= $1 700 000. Interesting!
So, what can we do to make the most of this opportunity? Well, it’s easier than you would think. Obviously, trying to get traffic from people searching for eBay or PayPal would be very difficult but there are literally thousands of other companies that people search for. For example, I just checked the three best known British sports betting companies - about 20 000 searches are made each month on Overture for these companies.
I have noticed that without any effort whatsoever, I am actually getting a lot of traffic from people searching for company names and script names. This is because they are listed in my Affiliate and Script directories. An example of the process is - people search for a particular merchant, come to my affiliate directory and click on the link to get to the merchant. Therefore, even though they have no interest in the affiliate program, I’m making money just by linking to merchants who’s content is completely unrelated to mine.
Remember, this is without even trying. When I do try, I’m getting even more traffic. For example, I have a review of the FastClick ad network on my site. I get 10+ visitors each day from people searching for phrases that include the word fastclick. That’s 300+ visitors per month, 15 000 per year. As you could imagine, due to the fact that FastClick pay a lifetime 5% commission on referred earnings, this is quite lucrative.
So, what do you need to do? Well, you probably already use affiliate programs in some form on your site - either as a major source of revenue or to make “backend” sales. I went for years just linking to them with banners, buttons and text links. The odd short recommendation here and there proved to be the best way to get the most out of them.
The problem, from a search engine perspective, is that just linking to them from your site will generally not get your page up high in the search engine rankings. A link to merchant “Acme Corp.” just blends in to the text on your page and is assigned no real relevance. Therefore, you should put up an individual page on your site for each merchant that you are an affiliate of. This page could just be a review of the products or services that they offer.
Just the fact that you have a content rich page about a specific merchant will almost automatically get you traffic from the search engines (once you are listed). The main point is “content rich”. Also, write it yourself, do not copy content from the merchants site. Why? Well, even if they let you copy their content (lots do), Google has ways of finding duplicate content. In fact, they will usually ban the page that they believe is less important if two have the same information on them. So, write it yourself.
Remember that if the merchant sells products that have gained recognition from the public, make sure you list their products.
If you already have a successful site, the search engines will actually view your “review” of a merchant as being important and it is no harder to get that page in to the top 10 listings than it is for any other page on your site.
Often, the difference between doing well and being truly successful online is just the ability to grab opportunities when they appear. You could find that spending just 10 minutes to set up a couple of new pages on your site could actually result in thousands of dollars in extra income each year.
Remember, there are close to 600 million queries made on search engines each day - this is an opportunity! Don’t let it pass you by.

Third Party Merchant Account Services
There are many different ways you can set up a merchant account, including through your bank or through an intermediary. Often these methods are complicated however and require that you prove your financial solvency. Thus for many small businesses establishing a merchant account isn’t always easy.
Fortunately that’s where third party processors come in. One example is Clickbank, a third party merchant account processor that provides a quick, easy and inexpensive setup for just about anyone. Some come with built in affiliate programs you can add to your website. One of the benefits of using a third party administrators is that any small business can usually sign up. There is a downside though… many pay less frequently, up to a month in between payments thus you may have to wait 30-45 days for funds to be settled. For many small businesses this leads to problems.
Disadvantages Third Party Merchant Account Processors
Third party administrators like intermediaries will also charge you a fee. There are various fee structures, including set monthly fees or per transaction fees. Third party processors usually charge fees higher than those that other merchant account providers charge direct customers. This sometimes limits your choices when it comes to a third party processor.
You may also find you have to send your customers to the third party processors website to make a purchase, which some worry will make their business look cheap or less professional. You will probably also have to use a pre fashioned order form with the third parties form rather than your own.

The one main advantage of a merchant account is that it allows you to accept credit cards. This is of immense significance, especially if you deal with online businesses, because your website will need to access credit cards. A credit card is the most preferred facility in the online businesses for buying and consuming more and more goods and services. Buying without instant cash or even drawing instant cash without a bank balance, using the credit card, is quite appealing for many.
That’s why it is very important that you have a merchant account whether you work from a physical location or operate an online store. Though the idea of applying for a merchant account fazes some people, in reality building an online store is quite easy these days thanks to the major credit card processing companies, who took the necessary initiatives to streamline the process of setting up accounts. Also, technological advances have been so rapid lately that much software has been devised that is very easy to use, especially for the non-technical business owners to create and operate an online stores effectively.
Your online merchant account will cost more due to its riskier nature, but it shouldn’t be a hindrance for you from establishing a merchant account. Always look out for options to shop around for your merchant account. Banks don’t always have the best merchant account rates. Banks usually follow cash credit limits, which can be defined as an arrangement whereby the bank allows the borrower to borrow up to a certain limit, the cash credit limit. When talking about options in online merchant accounts, brokers can play a pivotal role in this regard. A broker is a person (agency) who arranges the purchase and sale of an asset by acting as an intermediary between the purchaser and the seller.
